Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 3 swimming lessons arrangements commencing Friday 11th September 2025
We have been able to secure swimming lessons for all our Year 3 children as part of their PE lessons this academic year. We have liaised with the swimming instructors who support our swimming lesson provision and it was agreed that it would be beneficial to look at giving our younger pupils the opportunity to learn to swim throughout the school year, rather than giving different year groups a term each across the school year. This will hopefully allow the majority of our pupils to feel confident in the water and therefore learn to swim effectively by the end of Year 3.
Apologies that we are only confirming these arrangements at the start of the school term, but we always have to wait for confirmation of timetabling and swimming slots before we can issue information that we have been able to secure which cannot be provided until late into the summer holidays.
Lessons take place at The Abbs Cross Sports Centre, which is within easy walking distance from RJ Mitchell Primary School. The children will be escorted to the pool by adults and they will all be wearing a high visibility jacket.
We would like to thank Abbs Cross for mostly keeping the same times throughout the academic year but there are some slight changes through the year to accommodate their timetables. Listed below are the swimming times to note:
Friday 11th September until Friday 24th October 2025 will be timetabled as follows:
Friday Rose Class 1.00-2.00pm
Friday Lock Class 2.00-3.00pm
Thursday 6th November until Friday 12th December 2025 will be timetabled as follows:
Thursday Lock Class 2.00-3.00pm
Friday Rose Class 2.00-3.00pm
Wednesday 14th January until Wednesday 11th February 2026 will be timetabled as follows:
Wednesday Rose Class 1.00-2.00pm
Friday Lock Class 2.00-3.00pm
Friday 27th February until Friday 20 March will be timetabled as follows:
Friday Rose Class 1.00-2.00pm
Friday Lock Class 2.00-3.00pm
Friday 24th April until Friday 10th July will be timetabled as follows:
Friday Rose Class 1.00-2.00pm

Please be aware that the above timings may be subject to change based on the Abbs Cross requirements. However, we will give you as much notice as possible.
Your child will need to bring their swimming kit – swimming shorts or swimming costume (NO bikinis or swim shorts that are knee length), a swimming hat and a towel in a bag on the day of their swimming session. If your child does not have a swimming hat, they can be purchased from the school office at a cost of £1.50 and will be available from Monday 8th September (cash only).
If it is necessary for your child to wear swimming goggles, you will need to sign a consent form as there are rules and guidelines of which you should be aware. Consent forms must be given to the office by Wednesday 10th September 2025. You can access the consent form by clicking on the link in the School Jotter.
The children should wear their PE kit when attending swimming sessions.
If there are any medical concerns that staff need to be made aware of in relation to your child attending swimming lessons, then please contact their class teacher in the first instance by email.
