R J Mitchell Primary School

Aspire, Believe and Achieve!

Our Curriculum

ASPIRE - LEARN - FLOURISH

The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.

R J Mitchell Primary School is a vibrant, inclusive community where our pupils embark on a transformative educational journey. Guided by our vision to "Aspire, Believe, Achieve," we have crafted a curriculum that nurtures the unique potential of each pupil, empowering them to soar and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced educational experience, catering to the diverse needs and interests of our pupils; encouraging pupils to become lifelong learners.

Rooted in the National Curriculum, we have further enriched our offering through the CUSP (Curriculum with Unity School Partnership) framework, ensuring our pupils develop a deep, interconnected understanding of core subjects while exploring a wealth of creative, practical, and outdoor learning opportunities.

We are part of the Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership (CUSP) and follow the CUSP programmes of study. CUSP is developed through evidence-led practice with a focus on the structures of the curriculum, such as retrieval, spaced retrieval practice and interleaving. It is underpinned by explicitly vocabulary instruction and research-focused pedagogy, which ensures our pupils receive high-quality teaching across the curriculum.

Through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, we ensure that our pupils develop a deep understanding of core subject knowledge and skills. We place a strong emphasis on vocabulary development, enabling our pupils to articulate their learning with confidence and precision.

We strive for all our pupils to have a wide variety of skills and knowledge in all areas of the curriculum. We aim to challenge our pupils and build their independence, encouraging them to be risk-takers in their learning in order to grow and develop as learners. We ensure the curriculum gives our pupils a chance to experience real-life situations, which in turn builds their resilience, ambition and self-esteem. We believe that all of this combined allows them to have the skill set and knowledge to transition into the next stages of their educational careers.

During their time at R J Mitchell Primary School, pupils will experience many exciting and unique learning opportunities from trips, outdoor learning, visitors and themed events. We believe this broadens their understanding of the world they live in, allowing them to experience new things which inspires them throughout their lives.

Alongside our academic focus, we offer a wide range of enrichment activities and extracurricular clubs to support our pupils's social, emotional, and physical development. From sports and arts to STEM-based projects, our pupils have ample opportunities to explore their passions and discover new interests.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and diverse school. When the national curriculum is not accessible to our pupils, we have designed and created bespoke curriculum programmes for pupils to develop in specific focus areas that are individual to that pupils needs. This gives all our pupils the ability to flourish in their learning.

Recognising that education extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom, we place equal emphasis on the social, emotional, and physical development of our pupils. Through our 'SOAR' values of being Supportive, Outstanding, Aspirational, and Resilient, we foster an environment where pupils feel safe, valued, and inspired to reach new heights. By addressing the diverse needs of our community, we ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to thrive and make a lasting, positive impact.
